When architectural photographer Casey Dunn found a one-third-acre blank-slate lot in East Austin, he called on his longtime friend Arthur Furman—whom he'd known for years through mutual friends and countless project shoots—to design the house before Side Angle Side had even opened its doors. Dunn's only real requirement was the home's iconic form: a simple box with a gabled roof, inspired by a photo he'd once taken of an old shack in Maine, paired with a pared-down, Marfa-modern sensibility drawn from his years photographing that town's architecture. The finished 2,005-square-foot home, built by Waller Build, layers in personal history throughout—old pine beams milled into flooring, kitchen shelving from salvaged wood Dunn found roadside in Brownsville, and a salvaged tub from a home on Red River Street—turning the house into a lived-in scrapbook of Dunn's career as it doubled as the site of his own courtship and marriage during construction.
