When photographer Lili Jamail bought this 1937 Austin bungalow off-market from an owner in her social circle, she promised to keep up its longstanding tradition of backyard gatherings—a promise she's kept ever since. Six months after closing, she brought back Arthur Furman and Annie-Laurie Grabiel of Side Angle Side, who'd previously done light work on the house for its former owner, to replace a non-compliant shed and carport with a 453-square-foot studio and pool house, and to open up the main home's choppy floor plan. The team removed pillars that disrupted the flow between rooms, introduced softly curved archways and plaster shelving around the original fireplace, and turned a pair of $20 vintage green shutters into sliding doors for the office, framed in white oak to match the kitchen. Outside, steel-framed trellises—inspired by a rose-covered cottage upstate—now train ivy up the exterior, tying the house to the garden Jamail and her circle have always gathered in.
