Shed House

Side Angle Side designer John Redington and his father discovered the site for this Llano-area home on a two-week road trip between Austin and Dallas, drawn to a rural hilltop where two trees perfectly frame views of the Riley Mountains. Designed as a gathering place for three generations of family, the single-story home draws on Redington's parallel work as an artist and historian of vernacular Texas sheds and barns, translating their utilitarian, agrarian forms into a modernist idiom in the spirit of Mies van der Rohe and the Bauhaus. Clad in corrugated aluminum with a long, thin footprint and sliding glass doors that flood the interior with light, the Shed/House distills Redington's lifelong appreciation for Texas's humble outbuildings into a home built to be shared.
